Azerbaijan State Agricultural University dates its history to the Agriculture Department of Baku Polytechnic Institute, which was established on November 14, 1920. Originally located in Baku, the school was established in 1920 after the Red Army's invasion and foundation. The new government decided that the previous technical school, the Baku Polytechnicum, would be closed and replaced by the more traditional polytechnic institute, the Baku Polytechnic Institute. The new school focused on training engineers in a wide variety of industries: agriculture, civil engineering, electromechanics, economics, and petroleum. The new school changed its name over the years as its emphasis changed to meet the needs of Azerbaijan. In 1923 the name of the school was changed to Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute. In March 1929, the Azerbaijan Communist Party decided to divide the school into three independent schools covering agriculture, economy and oil fields. Today, the university is the only public school in Azerbaijan that offers a university-level diploma for the agricultural sector.
