Established in 1971, the University of Bremen is an open research university, which is known to be under the Institutional Strategies category. Initially, the university was developed as a science complex. By 1982, the university improved its ranking in research, developed several endowment professorships, and gained national recognition. German Research Foundation has been funding the various research programs and centers at the university. The university participated in a pilot scheme for structural reform from 1996 to 2001. The scheme was funded by Volkswagen Foundation. This also supported the development of communication between the teaching, administration, and research units of the university.
