Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is not only Denmark's oldest university, but also one of the oldest in Northern Europe. The University of Copenhagen is the largest educational institution in Denmark. Together, the six faculties offer 36 departments and over 200 programmes for study in health and medical sciences, humanities, law, science, social sciences, and theology. The University of Copenhagen offers a significant number of courses in English each semester. This allows exchange students to put together a comprehensive study programm. As of October 2019, the university has had 39 Nobel laureates affiliated as alumni, faculty members and researchers. In total, campuses of UCPH have 942,184 square meters floor area, where the university uses 437 buildings and more than 32,000 rooms. Students often live in student residences or share apartments in Copenhagen. They are expected to take a critical and independent approach to their studies. A tradition at the University is the “Friday bar”, which is a social event organised by students at each department. It gives students (and staff) an opportunity to socialise.
