Founded in 1743, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg is a research university and one of the largest universities in Germany. By 1818, this university acquired a vast number of buildings such as the Schloss and the Schlossgarten. The name of this university has been borrowed from this university's first founder Friedrich, who was Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and its benefactor Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, who was Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach.
