Although there are many theories, what geographers have said over the years is that the Maltese Islands do not consist of a single whole land, but that there is a bridge connection to the land known as Sicily today, 100 meters below the sea.
Although it is one of the most isolated land parts of the Mediterranean, the findings obtained show that different communities have lived in Malta since the Neolithic period in 5000 BC.
The evidence comes from Malta's famous 11 monumental structures from ancient times. The ruins are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and are often considered one of the oldest unsupported structures in the world.
Having been a British colony for 150 years, Malta gained its independence in 1964. In 1974, it took the form of republican administration and joined the European Union in 2004.
The Maltese, like the British, drive on the left side of the road, although they no longer have any official loyalty to the British. In Malta and Gozo, traffic runs from the left. Unless otherwise stated on the traffic signs, the speed limit on rural roads is 80 km / h and in residential areas 50 km / h.
