The University of California was founded in 1868 and is one of the oldest universities in the United States. The school's major objective is for its graduates to strive for the happiness of future generations. Berkeley has a complete master's program that coexists with the undergraduate programs to a high degree. In 2012, the institution awarded 887 doctorates and 2,500 master's degrees. Admission to master's programs is not open to the general public; candidates must apply to the department or undergraduate program directly.
